Where to Place a Mosquito Trap (Placement Is the #1 Lever)
Put the trap away from where people sit, between your seating and the shady, vegetated, damp edges the mosquitoes come from, and keep it in shade rather than direct sun. An attractant trap pulls mosquitoes toward itself, so beside the patio chairs it brings the traffic to you.
Why not next to the patio?
Because the trap works by being more interesting than you are. It gives off carbon dioxide, the first and longest-range cue a female mosquito hunts by, so any mosquito still searching flies toward it — which means the trap brings mosquito traffic to wherever you put it. Set it on the patio table and you have invited every searching mosquito in the area to dinner. The American Mosquito Control Association says this outright: depending on placement, wind direction, and trapping efficiency, traps may actually draw more mosquitoes into an area than they can catch.
The correct mental model is interception. USDA-ARS entomologist Dan Kline puts the rule plainly: keep the trap out of the immediate area where people gather, and try to put it between the people and the source of the mosquitoes. A sentry posted out on the path, not a guard standing in the doorway.
One boundary worth naming. A mosquito that has already locked onto a person nearby is very hard to divert, because a living body broadcasts the full cue set — breath, warmth, humidity, skin scent — while a bait jar offers only part of it. The trap wins the early, searching stage of the hunt. It does not peel mosquitoes off your arm.
How far from where you sit?
Far enough that the plume is not drifting through your seating area. Treat 5–6 ft from seating as an absolute floor and go considerably further if the yard allows it: across the lawn beats beside the chairs, and the far side of a shrub line beats both.
No authoritative source publishes a homeowner distance figure, and any brand quoting you a precise one is making it up. What the evidence supports is the principle — out of the gathering area, and on the mosquitoes' side of it. If you can see the trap from your chair and it feels close, it is close.
What counts as the mosquito source?
Mosquitoes do not materialize on your patio. They emerge from standing water and rest through the day in cool, shaded, humid cover — tall grass, dense shrubs, ivy, the damp shadowed corner behind the shed, the ditch or drainage edge at the property line. From there they travel toward people.
Find that harborage and site the trap on the edge of it, on the route in. Rutgers' own guidance is to set traps along the edges of habitats to increase trapping efficiency: near the cover, not buried inside it, and not stranded out on open lawn. You are putting the trap on the doorstep between the damp corner and your chair.
One caveat outranks every placement rule. If there is active standing water on or beside your property, deal with that first — an unused pool, a clogged gutter, a forgotten bucket, or a neglected pond next door can produce more mosquitoes in a week than any yard device will ever intercept. Shade or sun?
Shade, and it is not a close call. In a peer-reviewed Rutgers field study published in PLOS ONE, identical traps caught consistently more than three times as many mosquitoes in shaded locations as in direct sun — mean catches of roughly 4 in sun against about 21 in partial or full shade. Partial and full shade performed the same, so you do not need a dark thicket; the effect is direct sun suppressing catch. Just keep it out of the blazing open.
For a fermenting-bait trap there is a second, independent reason. Yeast produces carbon dioxide best in mild warmth, peaking around 30–35°C (86–95°F); sustained heat approaching 60°C (140°F) kills it outright. An enclosed bait chamber in full afternoon sun can climb toward that range, at which point the trap has quietly cooked the very thing it was supposed to give off. Shade wins twice — more catch, and a bait that survives the afternoon.
This trips people up on a solar unit, so plainly: the panel is not the mechanism, it runs a small light. The bait is the mechanism. A panel picks up ambient and partial light perfectly well without being parked in direct midday sun, and a spot with morning light and afternoon shade is a fine compromise. Site the trap for the bait, not for the panel.
Height, wind, and stability
Hang or stand it around 5–6 ft from the ground for the general mix of biting species — the height CDC and Rutgers use for their own surveillance traps, which Rutgers calls satisfactory for the majority of species. If your problem is daytime ankle-biters like the Asian tiger and salt-marsh mosquitoes that bite at midday, set it lower; those species host-seek near ground level.
Wind matters more than people expect. Mosquitoes fly upwind toward a carbon dioxide plume, so you want that plume drifting toward where they come from, not out over the fence. NC State Extension notes that windy days and nights can push the attractant in directions that reduce its usefulness, and Rutgers lists protection from wind as a placement variable in its own right. A sheltered spot with light air movement is ideal; a gusty, exposed corner shreds the plume before it does anything.
Finally, make it stable. A jar of sugar water on uneven ground, or dangling where a dog can shoulder it, becomes a puddle and a chore. Secure footing, level ground, out of the path of kids and pets.

Not catching anything? Move it.
An empty jar is information, not a verdict. In the overwhelming majority of cases the answer is not the device and not the recipe. It is the spot.
Run this loop. Give the current position one full week of consistently fresh bait, so you are testing the location and not a jar of exhausted yeast. Two or three rounds usually finds the pocket, and yards vary enough in cover, wind, and where the water sits that nobody can tell you the answer in advance.

Does the bait matter as much as the spot?
Placement is the bigger lever, but a perfect spot cannot rescue dead bait. Yeast puts out useful, attracting levels of carbon dioxide for roughly 24 to 34 hours, so during active use the mix wants refreshing every one to two days. Past that the jar is largely just sitting there, and a week of it will make good placement look like bad placement.
Separately, empty and rinse the jar at least weekly. Standing sugar water is itself attractive to females looking for somewhere to lay eggs, and in warm weather eggs can reach biting adults in roughly 7 to 10 days.
